'Western' medicine has excelled in acute care (heart attacks, surgery, broken bones etc), but when it comes to chronic health issues, such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and auto-immune conditions, as well as sub-clinical issues (where Western medicine does not recognise a problem), the figures show that we are in the grip of an unprecedented crisis.
Such times call for a different approach which works hand in hand with mainstream medicine to bring about better outcomes for people with chronic health problems. Under a functional medicine approach, it makes sense to pinpoint the underlying cause of health problems, and work to address that cause, rather than rely solely on a pharmaceutical drug or surgical intervention approach. It makes sense to pinpoint the root cause of a headache (muscular tension, dehydration, food triggers), so you can address those issues in the long term, rather than just keep taking an aspirin over and over again (1).
When it comes to preventing and treating chronic illness, clearly something has gone wrong. Here’s why:
- Complex, chronic disease is rapidly increasing and it is predicted that for the first time in 1000 years, future generations are likely to die at a younger age than their parents (despite spectacular advances in modern medicine keeping us alive longer)
- Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980 and 65% of the world's population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight (2) (obesity is preventable)
- The total number of people dying from chronic diseases is double that of all infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria), maternal and perinatal conditions, and nutritional deficiencies combined (3)
So how can we turn this around? Is there a more effective approach to healthcare? The answer is yes.
What if we took the best of modern, western medicine and integrated this with natural, scientific, root cause-based approaches, that asked questions such as ‘why do I have these signs and symptoms', 'what are the triggers for my condition', 'what are my genes saying' and ‘how can I turn this around'?
Functional medicine digs deep into the root, underlying causes of health dysfunction through listening to you carefully, understanding your medical and family history and assessing your internal and external environment. We use the most advanced biochemical tests in the world (many of which are not available through the NHS or private hospitals), to pinpoint imbalances so that we can put effective, targeted protocols in place.
We understand that each one of us is different, with different root causes to illness which require unique tailored protocols. Lets take infertility for example. One persons infertility may be associated with low ovarian reserve, whereas the next persons infertility may be associated with a defect in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene. If the causes are different, how can the solution be the same?
There are millions of us who live in a sub-optimal state of health that impacts our day to day life, yet we are told this is normal. GP tests results often confirm ‘normality’ and there is no diagnosis, yet you know something isn’t quite right. At Optimised Personal Wellness, we won’t wait until your test results are severely low or high before acting, because we understand that addressing seemingly small imbalances at an early stage can prevent more serious health problems later.
We see the exceptional, real, long-term health benefits that this simple model delivers to our clients every day and we’re proud to be able to offer the these services at Optimised Personal Wellness.
To your healthy, optimised future,
